Anwar Ibrahim, still seeking to be Prime Minister, is challenging Malaysia’s entire political structure to win the prize

By : Newsdesk

About 10,000 people thronged the Sultan Sulaiman Club tonight to welcome Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to active politics. Among the crowd was Parti Keadilan Rakyat president and Anwars wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, daughter Nurul Izzah, Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, PKR vice president Azmin Ali and Batu MP Tian Chua. Also there were DAP and Pas leaders.

When Anwar arrived at 8.50pm, there were shouts of reformasi but no untoward incidents.

Police, including the Federal Reserve Unit and Light Strike Force patrolled the area but people were allowed to move about freely.

There was also a large foreign media presence, including television crew.

Anwar, the PKR adviser, is now legally allowed to be active in politics although during the last general election he went around the country giving ceramah for his party’s candidates as well as those from Pas and DAP.
Anwar had been banned from electoral politics for five years after his release from jail after he was convicted of corruption and abuse of power charges.

“A State divided into a small number of rich and a large number of poor will always develop a government manipulated by the rich to protect the amenities represented by their property.”

Harold Laski (1930)

That’s how the Malaysian national hockey team felt after their 3-3 draw with Japan in the Olympic qualifiers at the Green Stadium in Kakamigahara, Japan, yesterday. The Malaysians were understandably distraught over the last-minute goal awarded to the Japanese by umpire Murray Grime of Australia as it denied Sarjit Singh’s men a place in the final against Germany today.
